As virtual reality devices become increasingly popular and as they become integrated into our daily lives numerous accessories are hitting the market that are intended to enhance the total VR experience. The charging station is a good example. It is much nicer to have a special place to put our Meta Quest 2 while we are not using it than to just have it lying around. That special place should include charging during downtime to ensure that our Meta Quest 2 is ready when we are. I own 4 different charging stations. This review will compare 2 of them: The Gamulus Docking Station (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BFB9JQVQ) and the Cuddoth Charging Dock (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BR9869NQ). Both of the devices tested boast magnetic charging of both the hand controllers and the headset (more about magnetic charging below). Both have separate colored lights to indicate charging level of R, L controllers and headset. Both devices tested have little “light shows”. Both devices employ 1 of a kind, irreplaceable, make it or break it technologies. Both devices are well designed but there are important differences. Hand Controllers: Both devices supply li-ion AA like batteries with custom metal bands on the outside of the battery case (see photo). Both devices employ custom replacement battery covers for the hand controllers. Both devices employ USB-C magnetic connections for the headset. None of these innovations are interchangeable nor are they replaceable. So, if your controller battery fails no replacements are available. If you lose the battery cover it can’t be replaced. If you lose the USB-C magnetic connection for the headset…it cannot be replaced. Let’s look at each device: For the purposes of star rating, I am employing the following criteria for devices that utilize critical componentry (like specialized batteries, battery covers or magnetic inserts and cables): -1 star if it is not a major name brand with an actual website -1 star if the critical componentry is not available to be replaced (e.g. no replacement batteries available) The Gamulus Docking Station has been my personal favorite. As mentioned above it utilizes special batteries that have metal charging bands on 1 side and replacement battery covers on the handles. Once installed the controller snaps neatly into position when placed into the controller charging cradle. An indicator light confirms charging status. The Gamulus Docking Station employs a USB-C male to magnet insert for the headset charging port. A supplied USB-C to magnet cable attaches magnetically to the headset insert. Because the connection is by cable the Gamulus Docking Station is compatible with OEM head straps and auxiliary batteries. The Gamulus might be your best choice if you use an auxiliary battery. You would simply plug the USB-C male to magnet insert into the auxiliary battery and keep the auxiliary battery plugged into the headset as you normally do. Another reason to choose the Gamulus Docking Station is its vertical format. The controller cradles are in the base and the headset rests on a pedestal in between. Because of this configuration the Gamulus Docking Station has a slightly smaller footprint. If you are short on shelf space that might be a real plus. I could not get the Gamulus Docking Station to charge the controllers with grips. It is possible that if you put little holes in your grips in line with the cradle electrical contacts it might charge but I was not willing to mutilate my grips to find out. It seems that Gamulus markets some charging stations that include grips but I was unable to find the Gamulus Grips sold separately. No power cable included. I could find no Gamulus web site. So, I subtracted 1 star I could find no replacement parts for the Gamulus batteries, battery covers, magnetic inserts or magnetic cable so I subtracted an additional star Gamulus Docking Station pros: 1. Compatible with OEM Auxiliary Batteries 2. Smaller Footprint 3. Convenient controller charging cradles Gamulus Docking Station cons: 1. No power cable 2. No replacement batteries available Gamulus Docking Station score: 3 stars The Cuddoth Charging Dock is a close second to the Gamulus Docking Station IMHO. The Cuddoth Charging Dock comes supplied with batteries that are similar to the Gamulus batteries. These batteries are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE with Gamulus. The metal bands are spaced closer together than the metal bands on the Gamulus batteries (see photo). Thus, the battery covers are also not interchangeable. I could not get controllers with grips to even fit into the controller charging cradle let alone get the controllers to charge with the grips on. The Cuddoth Charging Dock supplies a similar USB-C Male to magnet insert that must be plugged into the headset charging port. However, the Gamulus utilizes a North magnet and Cuddoth employs a South magnet (or vice versa). So, these inserts are not interchangeable with each other. When the headset is placed into the Cuddoth headset cradle a built-in magnetic charger on the base makes contact with the magnetic insert on the headset. This system would not be compatible with auxiliary batteries. You would need to disconnect your auxiliary battery from the headset and plug in the magnetic insert. You would need to re charge your auxiliary battery separately. Later, you would need to remove the magnetic insert from the headset charging port (don’t lose it!!!) and plug the auxiliary battery into the headset. WHAT A PAIN! I recommend, for this reason, the Gamulus Charging Station over the Cuddoth Charging Dock if you use an auxiliary battery that you keep plugged in. One advantage of the Cuddoth Charging Dock is its low profile. All three devices (both controllers and the headset) rest in the cradle giving the Cuddoth Charging Dock a lower, more stable center of gravity. You might choose the Cuddoth Charging Dock if you are worried about knocking it over of if you have a wobbly shelf. A USB-C to USB-C power cable is included. I could find no Cuddoth web site. So, I subtracgted 1 star I could find no replacement parts for the Cuddoth including batteries, battery covers or USB-C magnetic inserts, so I subtracted an additional star Cuddoth Charging Dock pros: 1. More stable base 2. Power cable included 3. Convenient controller charging cradles Cuddoth Charging Dock cons: 1. Not compatible with OEM auxiliary batteries 2. No replacement batteries available Cuddoth Charging Dock score: 3 stars

My son asked for this for his Birthday. Charged his headset on Day 1, day 2 his headset was 4% after charging on the charger station for 8 hours. My son is so upset. Would not recommend.

Honestly I’ve been needing a charging stand for so long, i actually started playing my quest 2 more again because i can get a little gaming session in, place it on the stand charger it then play again when I’m ready. This comes with the stand, 2 controller batteries, and 2 controller battery plates. It’s super easy to use and i recommend it, everything works as described

This item would work perfectly if you didn’t add a whole lot to your headset. I have a new head strap with a battery pack on the back of it, making it weighted evenly. However, because of this it won’t seat properly on the dock. The USB C magnetic adapter is pretty cool, but I lost it because of my toddler. The controller charger works fine if you don’t have grips on it. Meh

Ordered this but had to return it because the magnetic type-connector was missing. Had a new station sent to me in just 2 days... but had the same missing part.

I was tired of my metaquest floating around and the controllers just laying wherever making it look messy. This was the perfect solution as it keeps the items together and makes it look organized! I love that it is magnetic because it is convenient.

At first I was concerned this wouldn’t be that great since it seems like too light weight plastic, but this works perfectly! Really easy assembly; just had to change the batteries and the covers for the controllers and plug in the charger magnet. Although they weren’t completely out of power, I was pleasantly surprised it only took 2 hours to fully charge. Love the little lights showing they are charging for each individual item. Noticed the left controller took much longer than the right to charge, but not sure if that’s expected. Still great product and fair pricing

We followed all of the instructions, including the call-outs regarding how to place the VR components into their respective slots, but the connection is never solid (meaning that a slight shift or subtle movement will turn the charging indicators from red to green). One controller port, in particular, could never reach 100%, no matter how long it sat in that port. It would simply shift from charging, to suddenly not charging, and then back to charging again all night long. We confirmed that the batteries were aligned properly to allow the charging contacts to connect properly to the batteries, but it would trickle charge to a certain percentage, and then go no further. The fundamental requirement for a charging station is that it charge properly. This doesnt do that, so I cannot recommend it.

    Greater than one week

Does not charge the Oculus completely, if it even charges it at all!!!!
