Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor, Black

Beautiful image set in a good, unobtrusive matte bezel. I replaced a deceased TN panel with this, its wonderful no longer having viewing angle or a photos location on-screen affecting brightness and contrast when I process things. The stand seems sturdy and has nice tilt, rotation and height adjustments. Out-of-the-box default settings had the panel WAY too bright and it seemed to have a bit of a cold cast; if like me you dont have calibration equipment TFT Central makes available a color profile you can try. That plus the brightness brought down to 35 worked well enough for me and images are beautiful, without their ICC Im not sure I couldve tuned it well by eye (its amazing how quickly our eyes adjust to compensate for color casts). Im glad they kept the 16:10 Aspect ratio instead of 16:9, 1920x1200 has lots of real estate, and the only reason Im not giving this 5 stars is that Dell is a pain to deal with if you havent purchased directly from them. I had to call them three times (and ignore a thread in their forum where their liason misinformed me) before getting an employee who would deign to entertain my questions without an order number or service tag, finally a tech rep acknowledged for me that yes, the manufacturers 3-year warranty (from time of manufacture at rear) remains valid despite my inability to obtain an order number.

First of all, this monitor is designed for mainstream users who surf the Internet, read and write email, watch videos, perform word processing, fill-out spreadsheets, and write code. This monitor is NOT targeted towards those who need to see a wide gamut of colors for photography, video editing, and graphics design (see the U2410 model instead). Out of the box, the monitor is not calibrated. However, there are built-in color profiles that you can pick based on your viewing situation: standard, multimedia, game, movie, text, color temperature, and finally custom. Compared to other monitors out there, the U2412M features an extremely sturdy base. It promotes ergonomics by allowing you to adjust the height of the monitor to match your direct line of sight. The documentation does not explain how to adjust the height of the monitor, but you can simply hold two fingers on each end of the monitor stand at the top and push up or down (make sure the monitor is upright). The 1920x1200 resolution on a 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio is a huge plus for those who constantly edit spreadsheets. Compared to 1920x1080, you get more rows of cells to display on the screen. Overall, I highly recommend the U2412M as its the best bang for your buck for an IPS monitor in the $300 range.

Ive been trying to find a new monitor for some time now. I tried 27 monitors but in every case there was a problem with them - color desaturation, glass chips, LED bleeding, dead pixels, stuck pixels, defective ports, etc. Maybe I have terrible luck but is it so much to ask that a monitor actually fully work out of the box? Apparently so - I gave up on 27 monitors and turned to 24 monitors. Even in that range I had a real issue finding one that I liked (including other Dells) - until I came across this monitor. This is how monitors should be: sharp, clear, colorful, responsive, and with no defects. I liked this monitor so much I ended up getting three of them (and none of them had any problems). The picture is excellent and the colors are perfect. I havent noticed any ghosting when gaming and the viewing angle is great. The ONLY thing bad I have to say about the monitor is its lack of connections. Oh sure, it has DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort but I would have liked to have seen a second DVI port and/or an HDMI port (I hook in a Windows box and a Mac Mini). A very minor complaint, though. PROS: *Great Picture/Color/Response. *Everything worked! No dead pixels, no stuck pixels, no damage, no marks, no LED bleeding, no desaturation, great lighting and color balance - this was true on all three monitors. *Good menu system. *Excellent adjustable stand. *1920x1200 resolution is nice, 16:10 makes a huge difference. CONS: *Connections - would have been nice to have a second DVI port or an HDMI port; minor complaint though. This is easily one of the best monitors Ive ever seen, now if only there was a 27 version. I highly recommend it.

I just purchased my 3rd one of these, to round out the display capability of my laptop/docking station. Theres a lot to like about this monitor: 1. IPS display. After having bought a traditional LCD and seeing how the colors skew across the screen, I knew IPS was worth the extra cost. Frankly, I dont have a real need for it, but its just nice to have a display with consistency. 2. LED backlighting. The market is flooded with these now, but when I first bought one of these a year ago, it wasnt the case and the premium for them was steep (except with this one). LED saves energy, which saves both money both from the wall outlet and from the A/C not having to evacuate the heat from the room. It also supposedly has truer whites, but I must admit I cant see the difference. 3. 16:10 resolution. Frankly, I think 4:3 is even better, but those days are sadly gone for good. I had a 1600x1200 21 tube monitor for years and it was great. Since most of what we do on the computer is vertically oriented, losing 120 vertical lines for a 1920x1080 / 16:9 display (the vast majority of displays these day) really stinks. By going 16:10, this is 1920:1200, so I didnt lose pixels in either direction. 4. Dell speaker accessories. I guess a monitor with built-in speakers would be OK too, but often the sound quality is pretty weak. With Dells AS501 (or newer AS510) speakers, they snap right onto the monitor and get their power from the monitor. No wall wart to deal with and the speakers go to sleep when the monitor does. They sounding pretty good to boot. 5. The built-in USB hub is nice too I guess. About the only warning Id give about this monitor, is that its dot-pitch is a bit low. The defacto standard is about 100 pixels per inch and this one is about 90 ppi. One could both consider this a plus (its a large display) and a minus if youre putting it next to other monitors. Originally I had this next to a laptop display which had one on the higher side of the defacto standard (I forget now but Im thinking about 110 ppi). Let me tell you, the difference made things cumbersome. When you dragged windows between screens, they physically change size, the text gets smaller/larger, etc. It was more disconcerting than I expected. It wasnt long before I managed to squeeze another $300 out of the budget to get a second one. So, if youre planning on setting up multiple monitors, be aware of the pixel densities and try to match them as well as possible. If youre buying all new ones, make sure theyre the same... and 2 of these is as good a choice as you can find in this size/resolution range. So I really like this monitor, and now that my new laptop supports 3 displays... Im adding another one. :)

First, let me say I really like my Dell U2412m monitor. Ive had it about a month and have thoroughly enjoyed using it everyday, and for the price point, this is a wonderful monitor with an excellent feature set. However, its not perfect. The first one I received had severe clouding in the right top and bottom corners. Of course, these come setup with the brightness at an eye searing 75%, and the clouding diminished a bit when I turned it down to a more reasonable 30%, but it was still quite evident on a dark image, and not acceptable for my main purpose of photo editing, so back it went (thanks Amazon for the easy no hassle exchange!). The second one also has a tiny bit of clouding in the corners, but only when viewed really close-up, and mostly not visible at all except on a completely dark screen. So, not perfect, but acceptable. I really like the 16x10 ratio, its a nice big workspace. The build quality seems up to Dells high standards, and I love the stand, with its easy and yet very secure adjustments. I will say that the color on my second monitor leaned toward the green, cyanish side (yuck). Unfortunately, the color controls in the main menu are not fine enough for the kind of color adjustments that were needed, but luckily for me, I found some sites on the internet that described how to carefully access the service menu, and I was able to tweak the color to perfection using some very good LCD monitor test images I found using Google. So, lets wrap it up: Pros: 1. Good build quality 2. Excellent color and picture (when tweaked correctly) 3. Easy and stable stand adjustments. 4. Works beautifully with both my new Mac Mini AND my 10 year old Mac G4 (using a USB switch) 5. Lots of inputs and USB connections 6. 3 Year warranty Cons: 1. A bit of clouding in the corners, but generally not visible during normal use. 2. Only USB 2.0 3. No HDMI input So, would I recommend this? Yes, but with qualifications. Be sure and check your screen for unacceptable clouding, and be prepared to tweak the brightness, contrast, and color. If you can live without HDMI and USB 3.0 ports, than this monitor should be on your short list. UPDATE (March 4, 2013): I really like this monitor. It has performed flawlessly over the last 5 months. The bit of clouding in the corners doesnt seem to show up in real world use. No color drift and no problems whatsoever. I leave it on 24 hours a day and it automatically goes into power-saving mode whenever I put the computer to sleep. For the price, this is quite a nice monitor. Update (Sept 5, 2013): The thing I like most about this monitor, it just works. I know that sounds simple, but in this complex world of cables, and operating systems, and weird stuff, its nice to have something that I can just plug in and it works perfectly, all day, every day. The color has been SUPER stable, with no drift. The slight clouding in the corners hasnt gotten worse, and doesnt effect my day to day photo work. All-in-all, an excellent and reliable monitor.

One of the best purchases I have ever made. As a software engineer and photography enthusiast who works with computers most of the time when not sleeping, I have high standards for monitors and have played with a lot of them. I can say that this one is the best value for the money. The color is pretty accurate (not as accurate as those super expensive monitors that cost $1000+ though), and the uniformity of the display is superb. Dont get tricked by those fancy looks and functions of some cheap monitor (not so cheap though, still cost $100+)--those functionalities have nothing to do with the display quality. This display is so good that I immediately bought another one for my GF after getting my hands on this one. You could easily find that the color in those display you used before (TVs, cheaper monitors) are far more inferior and you immediately enter a new world with vivid color. This monitor is great for programming and photo editing for enthusiasts (pros may choose those expensive ones), and other uses that you could imagine. The 16:10 ratio is also optimal for working, and I never had any problems with movies even though for 16:9 movies you cannot get a full coverage. Actually I found the bottom black gap is perfect for subtitles. If youre looking for a 24-inch monitor, buy this one as fast as you can. You may also want to consider the 27-inch version if youre looking for a larger monitor.

Just got this a couple days ago and it is a very nice monitor. Looks great! I was worried about some of the reviews I read about anti glare coating, displayport issues, etc, but everything seems to be in order, and I couldnt be happier. The larger box it came in was pretty mangled when it arrived, but the monitor was unharmed. This Dell Makes my other monitor look worse than I thought it was by comparison (ASUS VS248H-P), so now I want another one of these ;) The increased resolution really makes this seem a lot bigger (a good thing :) ) The colors look great out of the box, so I dont feel the need to calibrate, but I may run it later on to see how it changes things. Though, I havent had that great of luck with the Spyder calibrator previously, so I may just enjoy my monitor as it is (which looks great right now anyway). Very bright picture as well, and Ive actually turned down the brightness from the default 75, to 50. I have it connected to my PC, which uses a Nvidia GTX660 via displayport (with HDMI going to my ASUS). Hopefully itll last for a long time without any problems, but for now, very happy.

Coming from TN panels, I was really impressed with this monitor. Considering that its a eips instead of the other. I used to game on 3 TN panels on eyefinity portrait and I thought that was amazing. I decided to upgrade because the horrible viewing angle. So, I bought 3 of these bad boys for eyefinity portrait. At first I was a bit skeptical about it being an IPS panel that stuck with 60hz refresh rate and 8ms would be bad for fps. Thats not the case. Powered by two 6970s with the combined resolution of 3600x1920(no bezel correction) I was blowned away by the crisp quality of the color when playing BF3 and Starcraft 2. However I did notice that its a bit slower than my old TNs when it come to ghosting, but thats a good trade off for better colors. I though the colors are good right off the box but I was wrong, after calibration(I downloaded the ICC from TFT Central and make sure the color temp are around 6500k which can be change in monitor factory menu) I notice that they looks a lot better than before. Pros: 1)1920x1200 (extra pixels are always welcome in my book) 2)Color reproduction for a e-IPS 3)Awesome viewing angle especially in portrait 4)Good for gaming also 5)USB ports are very handy 6)Very good stand and good construction Cons: 1)Anti-glare coating are very aggressive in this monitor. When I did my dead pixels test and I notice that the monitors seems dirty so I took a piece of cloth and wipe them down. However its the AG coating that make the monitors appear to be dusty or grainy. To me its kinda annoying, some might not find it annoying at all. I love white background so the AG coating are a bit distracting. 2)Backlight bleed are a bit strong in this monitor. Being an LED, I understand that you cant avoid it. Out of the 3, one seem to be worse that the other 2. 3)Thick bezels are one thing that eyefinity/surround gamer tend to stay away from. I agree that the bezel are a bit thick in these but you cant avoid it. After playing for more than a month, youll get use to it. You can also debezel them but that will void your warranty...unless youre good.... 4)No HDMI. Bummer but I learnt to live without it. Overall, I love my U2412m. Its a completely different experience when playing on portrait. You can feel more immersible and with good viewing angle you cant go wrong with these. One thing to note is to good look at it locally before you pull the trigger.

Im a photographer making the transition to video capture and editing (which will be my primary workflow). I shoot with Canon and exclusively use older Zeiss lenses. I process on a 2010 15 Macbook Pro duo-core i7 processor with 8gb ram. I recently purchased a Spyder 4PRO color calibrator for monitor calibration. Im not a video gamer, so monitor response time is not that much of a concern (if you primarily game, save $150 and buy a TN panel). Okay, with all that in mind: I researched monitors for a month prior to my purchase and decided that, regardless of the money, an IPS panel was critical for color gamut and angle of view. Of the IPS panels, Dell had the winning combination of video performance as well as physical ergonomics within a $500 budget. It became a question of the U2412 ($300 on Amazon) and the U2410 ($500 on Amazon): Both monitors had a well-built feel. They had heavy, solid bases that prevented tipping within reason. The menus were intuitive and easy to navigate. It wasnt until I calibrated the color with the Spyder 4PRO that I noticed a potential problem for photographers using the U2412. The Spyder 4PRO is such a dream to use in this system configuration, and will actually show you how your monitors color gamut compares within SRGB, NTSC, and ADOBE RGB color spaces. THE U2412 FALLS JUST SHORT OF AN SRGB COLOR SPACE, AND IS ONLY 77% OF AN ADOBE RGB COLOR SPACE. If you want the option of viewing your images in an ADOBE RGB colorspace, the U2410 is capable of that color gamut - not the U2412. The U2412 is a stellar in the image department, showing as much subtle mid-tone as my camera can capture. I will, however, note that blacks could be just a touch deeper. Again, its easy to get neurotic with exacting measurement. It must be put into perspective that, for my line of work, web-based media is the future, as broadcast network tv is becoming dead as dead. with this in mind, even if Im watching media on a prefect screen, the masses who will stream it are definitely watching it on wildly inaccurate monitors, so when alls said and done, where do you draw the line on critical performance perfection? Out of the box, both monitors need to be calibrated (previous reviews about a blue/red hue are right on). Dont rely on the pre-fab video options for games, movies, etc. - they are not accurate. I personally cant fault a monitor for not being accurate out of the box - I understand that proper monitor calibration is a step that must be taken and is dependent on specific variables regarding monitor location, workflow, etc. I found the Spyder 4Pro to be a 10minute process from start to finish and was dead on the first time... because exact directions were followed. Again, the U2412 is plenty of accurate monitor for the price. !!! ADD-ON COMMENT !!! THERE ARE NO HDMI INPUTS FOR THE U2412, ONLY THE U2410. IF YOU ARE ON A MACBOOK, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PROPER DVI INPUT. MY MACBOOK REQUIRES A MINI DVI - STANDARD DVI ADAPTER... NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH A MICRO DVI - STANDARD DVI ADAPTER (EVEN SMALLER INPUT FOR IPADS). APPLE SELLS THE MINI FOR $40 AND THE MICRO FOR $20. AMAZON SELLS THEM FOR $5. *** 6 MONTH FOLLOW UP *** Monitor behaves just as it did out of the box. No problems of any kind to report.

I work in I.T. and this probably one of my favorite monitors I have ever used. The Dell UltraSharp screen, while not 4K, makes it easy to read text off the display without easily detecting pixels. The colors on this monitor are fantastic. Plus, the 16:10 ratio makes it easy to see more of documents at once. The build quality of this monitor far surpasses typical monitors you would purchase. And, of course, the easily adjustable stand is fantastic. I find writing programs so much easier in vertical position, which can easily be done with this monitor. Additionally, I find myself changing the height and angle throughout the day as my activities change, relieving my back and eyes from strain. The only downside to these monitors is that they do not have HDMI inputs. However, the DVI input can be used as an HDMI port with an HDMI to DVI cable, so this is not a major downside. The monitors also have a 4-port USB hub, VGA input, and DisplayPort input. I recommend these monitors to everyone I work with, and bought 2 for my mother. Amazing product.
