This is a supremely useful & handy device for general use. It is trim, and economical in form and price. The LCD easily shows how well your scanned image is going to look (especially if you are scanning to a storage card and not to a PC). Although the quality of the image scanned is not for the videophile - for the quick scanning of a stack of pictures, or even documents - this device performs admirably.

    Greater than one week

This works not only for photographs but old news paper articles as well. The only draw back is you have to keep an eye on the photos shown on the display for signs of cleaning needed which isnt that big of a deal.

I purchased this scanner largely because I wanted a simple, portable, self-contained scanner which could scan 8.5 x 11 images. This scanner cant do that, despite its claims. I scanned ten photos, all were unacceptable. I calibrated the scanner. I scanned ten more photos and only one was acceptable. I cleaned the scanner with the cleaning sheet that is included and calibrated again. I scanned 100 photos and only three were acceptable. Acceptable, by the way, was a level of image integrity I would never settle for with even the most economical desktop scanner. The tonal clarity was pretty good, but the way the scanner pulls the photo through the scanning element is seriously flawed. Even the photos that flowed smoothly through the scanner were stretched. Most went through crooked, the result of the mechanism not being able to consistently grip on both sides at the same time. Some just sat there halfway through as the scanner chugged away. All the photos were in perfect condition -- no bends, staples, holes or any imperfections whatsoever. It may work great for smaller photos which fit inside the sleeve thats included, but if you need it to do 8.5 x 11 dont waste your time.

So glad I have this item. Took it with me to a family reunion and was able to scan photos and have copies. I make memory quilts and sometimes I need photos from family members without them knowing about it. So easy to use and I just loan it out, pictures get scanned, and person the quilt is being made for never knows until they get their quilt!

When I decided to do a little spring cleaning last month, I unearthed five or six boxes of old print pictures, some that were in a trunk belonging to my parents and even their parents. Print film has been around longer than I realized. The task was daunting, but I started, none-the-less, using my flat-bed scanner. After about an hour of that, I realized this was not going to get the job done. I quickly researched several scanners and chose the GiiNii among several that looked about the same. So far, I have scanned about 3,000 prints and the GiiNii is still ticking. It is very simple and fast. You just feed the photo (bare or with the provided plastic folder) into a slot and in just seconds the scanning is done. A LED screen lets you see the result, just in case you need a do-over. I did not give the GiiNii five stars because it does have occasional glitches. As other reviewers have indicated, it sometimes leaves a horizontal line in lower portion of the scanned photo. It also occasionally cuts off the top of vertically scanned photos. These are completely random events and does not happen often, but it happens. If a photo is cropped at the top, I simply delete it, and scan again inserting the photo the other way. You can rotate photos before finalizing the deal. The horizontal lines are usually so faint, it does not detract from the picture. If you were later going to blow it up to a 11 x 14, it would probably not be what you want. They recommend calibrating it every now and then, which is simple, but as far as I can tell, not entirely necessary. There is also a cleaning process that I used only once, just because I was curious how it worked. I like the fact that you can scan to an SD Card, then when time permits, download to a computer. As you can tell from the picture of the unit (if you are looking at one), it is very small and compact, about 12 x 3. It does not need to be hooked to computer to operate, which makes it very portable. Long story short, there are probably several good scanners out there, but for the price and durability (so far), I am very happy with this little gizmo.

I bought the GiiNii NuLife Full Size Photo Scanner in 2012 and scanned only about 100 photos right around that time and the scans were fine. I recently pulled the scanner off the shelf to do some more photo archiving but immediately noticed a problem with the scans. After scanning several photos and getting the same type of results, severe banding/striping, I looked in the front feed slot and saw that top of the inside looked like there were some bubbly protrusions hanging down; see the blue circled area with the two most noticeable bumps (most of that top feed area has some wavy bumps). I know this scanner is outside of the warranty period but I thought folks should know how little use its had and how poorly its performing now. Based on the customer service response from GiiNii support they claim that the problem is due to how the scanner was stored... without knowing how it was stored. It was stored properly on a shelf in a closed container, not too: hot, cold, wet or dry. Based on the poor quality and limited lifespan of the product (seriously, if you buy it, be sure to finish all the scanning you ever need to do right away), I would discourage anyone from buying this.
