My kid absolutely loves all Hidden Side Lego items and this was no exception. He greatly enjoyed the railroad theme in this particular example.

The Lego 70424 hidden side ghost train express building kit, is comprised of 698 components made in Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, China, the Czech Republic, and the USA. In addition to building the ghost train, an app is used to add interactive play using augmented reality. This kit is built in 5 steps detailed in the included instruction book. Each step comes with a set of numbered bags containing the parts needed. While this kit can be built by a single person, it is far more fun to get a buddy to join in. My boyfriend’s niece helped me build this kit, where she built certain parts and more often found the parts for me to assemble. This build took place in one afternoon and was greatly enhanced by friendly chatter, joking around, and much laughter. The 5 steps were mostly broken down to building the station, the back portion of the engine, completing the engine, the science car, and the container cart. The wings of the engine are set to swing out with the flip of a switch, while the mouth opens by twisting a lever. The station also has moving parts to change from normal to scary. The app takes longer than normal to download and install. Getting started wasn’t difficult though. I opened the app and followed instructions. The most challenging part was when I had to line up the train with the outline for the app to recognize it. The table was lit with the light source behind the train, and the app didn’t recognize the train until a flash of light occurred. From there I could choose to be a hunter or ghost and play the game. Once game play is complete, I could spend points on things like upgrades and capsules. The game is fun and has several skill levels. This was a pretty big build with lots of good parts and minifigures. The kids were drooling over the train parts and trestles to add to their current limited supply of train parts. But they were also interested in trying the interactive app. They downloaded it first but were a little disappointed that they needed to build the train before using it. In some ways that seems to be a unapologetic marketing trick to force you to buy the whole line. They tore into the build and had it put together in a couple hours that were interupted by supper. They enjoyed the build and I appreciate the actions on the engine like the pop out wings with side panels that raise up allowing the wings to pop out. The action is a little stiff, but satisfying. the opening hood that becomes a mouth is also interesting, although it all comes out a little childish to me. The whole line seems a little childish, but it is obviously aimed at a younger audience that is addicted to screens and collecting. Once built they tried the app and enjoyed it well enough. It seems to be a little like pokeman go in that you collect the ghosts. It has simple game play and some interesting interaction with the set. It is a little kitschy, and a little fun but not a lasting game. Definitely seems marketing driven. But all in all, it is a fun set, it has some incredible pieces and while the set will probably be cannabalized quickly, it was enjoyed a lot during the build. Nice set.

Boy are my nephews having fun with THIS set this long holiday weekend! It was not only easy to assemble but also allows for hours MORE engagement through the augmented reality feature with the app. This is truly an impressive set that soars above and beyond the problem-solving and kicks off the imagination!

So, when I received the LEGO Hidden Side Ghost Train Express 70424 Building Kit I hid in my closet until Christmas. I knew my 7 year old Lego Masterbuilder would love this. The problem with Hidden Side is that it is definitely for kids older than 8. This build requires all of my time because I had to supervise the build. This is frustrating for my son who doesnt really like to follow the instructions, but since this has an App element to it, I thought it would be integral to follow the directions. Thus, this was not a pleasurable experience for both of us. However, once the build was complete I was ready to download the App. But, wait. The App only works on certain devices and operating systems, so if you have an older smartphone like myself and you cant upgrade from iOS 10, then you are not going to be able to use Hidden Side as intended. The frustrating part is not the just fact we did all of that building and cant use the App, its the fact no where on the box, does it say that! I had no clue I wouldnt be able to download the App. So, now I have a very upset little kid who cant play with the Legos a the box says he can. Usually, I love Legos, and they keep coming out with new and interesting things, but the lack of information with this product isnt really like them. It should be clearly labeled, which iOS or Android systems are compatible. This way people dont waste their time and little kids arent disappointed in a toy that doesnt work to its fullest potential.

This is our first time trying the new LEGO line Hidden Side. We have not used the app functionality, but purely based on the building and play value, this is another great LEGO creation. Hours of entertainment.
