11-04-2025What is there to say? Mitutoyo is the gold standard. This was my first caliper, and I immediately checked its accuracy (perfect within the limits of what I can check). Ease of use is excellent: measuring inside, outside, or depth; metric or imperial; absolute or relative. The case is rugged and convenient. Unlike other calipers, this one doesnt devour batteries (solar obviously doesnt use batteries at all but does require that it sit out in strong light and is considerably more expensive). BE SURE TO BUY FROM AMAZON. Do NOT buy from a third party through Amazon. There are simply too many counterfeits floating around. Amazon is an authorized dealer and so your caliper will be genuine (other reviews on here will help you ensure authenticity when it arrives). This was the best deal I could find from a legit source. There are purists who want dial or vernier, and thats fine, but for a first caliper you want something that does imperial and metric and is a no-brainer to operate. My only critique is that Amazon doesnt make it easy to find genuine accessories. In my case, the shoulders for depth measurements. There are other very reputable brands out there, but for this product Mitutoyo is the default unless you have some compelling reason to grab something else.

> 3 dayMy 50 year old Mitutoyo 505-637-50 (analog 6) finally broke. Mitutoyo USA answered my email request for service in an hour, but said they cant get parts. No complaints, it was 50 years old. Bought the 500-196-30 digimatic because it is metric/inches and analog was one or the other. (My 12 digimatic which is 40 years old works great.) Mitutoyo has a warranty and factory service here in USA. None of the $20-50 Chinese calipers on Amazon mention a warranty. The 500-196-30 was $107 and I expect it will last 40 years. Excellent value.

> 3 dayBetween these and Sterrett brand you cant go wrong. These are legit and not clones or copies. I got them for the ease of measuring Imperial and Metric. They are super accurate and work great.

> 3 dayI have been using a dial caliper for hand loading for years. I recently decided get a digital caliper to make it easier to read measurements directly when using attachments on the jaws of the caliper. The first digital caliper I got was an inexpensive (~$25) instrument from a different manufacturer. That was a mistake. The inexpensive caliper was essentially useless for my purposes. Its consistency in reading was terrible. Frustrated, I decided to just spend the $ and get a good instrument (buy once cry once). I decided on a Mitutoyo 500-196-30 - I was not disappointed. What a caliper! Very accurate. Very consistent. Very easy to use. Very easy to read. Very good battery life AND uses a commonly available inexpensive battery. I cant find anything that I dont like about this caliper! I dont usually write reviews unless the product or customer service is extraordinarily good or extraordinarily bad... This caliper is that good - worth my time and my $ (and yours too!) Buy with confidence!

> 3 dayMade in Japan, you know wont go wrong; it does cost a lot more than China copies, but all the controls are smooth and easy to use, no lag on anything. Although Im sure a $20 China made one can do the job too, but if you have a choice will you pick made in China? lol

> 3 dayAccording to the online counterfeit guides, everything indicates that these are genuine Mitutoyo Calipers. The quality is superb. I am happy with the peace of mind of having a reputable name-brand product so that I dont have to wonder if they are accurate. I have had them every day for weeks now, and I have not had to recalibrate them once. If they dont indicate 0 when I close them I can be sure wiping the tips is the solution. They continue to reflect proper dimensions even with the display off, so if I turn them on while they are open I still get an accurate reading. According to the enclosed certificate, the accuracy is +/- 0.02mm or less for the entire length of travel. Movement is smooth and controlled. For over $100 they werent cheap, but I feel like they are a great value. If there are better ones out there, I dont want to know what they cost.

Greater than one weekI used the Mitutoyo 500-196-30 150mm caliper for years as a student machine shop hand in undergrad, and now I bought my own set. Its as good as I remember. They are a small piece of perfection in your hands. It came with a Certificate of Inspection that is specific to my caliper (the certificate has the serial number matching my caliper). It shows measurement errors at 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200mm lengths, as well as 0, 2, 4 and 6 lengths. It is NIST traceable via No.683/283699-13. It is also NMIJ/AIST and PTB traceable. I dont know if this is the same as the certificate of calibration that is optional on mcmastercarr, but it is a convincing document. As noted by others, it does not have an auto-off feature. The batteries last a long time, so I dont think this is an issue. One small disappointment: I bought the Mitutoyo 050083-10 75mm depth gauge attachment (
