NETGEAR 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (JGS516) - Desktop or Rackmount, and Limited Lifetime Protection

I purchased this switch for a new home network. It is very easy to use, which is good since very little documentation is included. Unpack, plug-in to power and plug in a DHCP router and ones network cables and it is up and running. I have not yet configured the switch internally as there are only Mac and Linux computers here in the house and the included software is Windows only - that accounts for the 4, rather than 5, star review. Network throughput is excellent. As others have noted, the fan is loud. As my switch is located in a Network Operations Center in a garage closet, noise is not a problem. I would not recommend this switch for living or working space, however.

Its an unmanaged gigabit switch, so theres no features to be reviewed. It does its job fine, in fact, I think the throughput might have increased when I replaced my SMC gigabit switch with this one. Two things though, the fan noise is noticeable from 3 away. Heck, my Intel quad-core Antec Sonata rig is quieter than this switch. Another thing is, this switch wont work if you have a mis-wired network cable. My old SMC switch will at least drop to 100mbit/s speed (since 4 wires required by 100mb/s speed are still correctly wired), with this switch, its all or nothing. No big deal though, a good network cable fixes the problem. I wouldve rated this a 4.5 star.
