Tried this product out based on other reviews. I needed to archive email and downloads to disc (could not use USB flash drive, which would have been much faster, cheaper and easier overall). In prep for re-imaging laptop, I needed to free up storage space on the HDD. DVDs were too small for 200+ GB of email. I had some issues burning to the disc that came with the unit, could not get it to burn. Had to purchase more discs to test out fully. BD-R (Blue Ray Disc) discs are spendy ($41 for pack of 10). Takes a while (25-30 mins) to burn files so be patient. Note- You will not get a full 100GB on the disc, there is overhead, i believe the best you can get is about 90-93GB. I had to break up my PST files into chunks (used 7-Zip). Seems to work as expected. I like the portability and design. I knocked off a star due to the issue with the included 100GB disk which ended up costing me more $ to complete my project.

Tried this out hooked up to a brand new Macbook Air M1 with brand new adapters. Initial connection was USB via Apples multiport adapter (USB, Power, HDMI). The drive would power on and sometimes recognize a disc enough to pull header type information. Could not load a blank CD or play a DVD or commercial audio CD. Pretty sure the Macbook Airs have a rep for low power output for HDMI, so I thought maybe USB was also underpowered. I swapped out the multiport adapter for a straight USB to USB-C adapter, and the drive started working, but its incredibly slow. It took AT LEAST a 1/2 hr to burn an hour long CD. Cmon now, I was burning hour long CDs in under 5 minutes 20 years ago. No excuse. Given its possible more power would improve things, I tried running it off a MacBook Pro that typically has no issues with power output or burning CDs. It was faster, but still took 10-15 minutes to burn a 40 minute disk. On the other hand, I hooked up a different CD burner to the brand new Macbook Air, and it burned the same CD in under 6 minutes. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ODDE33U/ So, if you dont care about BluRay support, go with the other drive. I may still order the power adapter and see if this drive can be salvaged, but will probably end up returning it.

I was excited to give this a try today. Upon opening the box I noted the inner plastic packing for the drive was torn open. And the plastic bag for the instructions were ripped open as well. The plastic on the player was also loose with no tape. Sold as new in box but obviously previously sold returned and sold again. However, I still attempted to utilize the drive and it did not work. Spent a few hours downloading software, drivers, etc. Overall bad experience and would not purchase again.

Unit is barely bigger than an optical disc. Perfect companion to the new MacBook Air.

What I have to say is about the company Pioneer. This was my second and last Disc burner I will ever buy from them. The receptical on the burners are pathetic. They are so temperamental that even the slightest downward movement of the wire can cut off the power and readability of the burners. I have wasted time with projects failing to complete burning when its even over 90% done with the burn.

This is an upgrade to my other Blue ray player. This uses only 1 USB3 port and it writes to Verbatim Mdisk, which is why I purchased it. So far so good. Works fine.

This is a lightweight, and easy to use external Blu-ray player that does everything I could require from an optical drive. Most laptops dont come with optical drives because the vast majority of software and other content is available via download from the internet. That being said, I still find myself in need of an optical drive for other tasks like burning images and being able to continue using software that I purchased years ago thats still on optical media. If you find yourself in need of a quality optical drive and youre looking for something that doesnt take up much desk real estate, I can highly recommend this product to you.
