Darn, these tools are hard to find at a reasonable price. It took quite a bit of searching on Amazon to find it. This is a tool specific to fascia boards that are generally 3/4 to 1 inch thick. This drills the hole through the board with a counter sink for the screw and starts the hole into the supporting sub structure. Then, if you use the correct screw, the screw head is flush with the board surface. Getting the correct screw can be a problem too. Many of the screws are for 1-1/2 inch thick sub fascia and are much too long for thinner sub fascia boards. The screws purchased with this are 1-7/8 inches in length and will just barely penetrate through the 1-in. thick fascia and the 1-in. thick sub fascia boards. The screws are stainless steel and will be used with PVC fascia boards. Glad I found it on Amazon for half the price of other sellers.

This tool is, unfortunately, a bit of a must have for installing composite deck fascia boards. While the basic concept is great, there are some flaws that make what should be a very handy tool, into one that is tolerated out of necessity. First, the housing has only a small hole in the side for chips to escape. Because of the way the composite material cuts, the chips are typically quite large and do not fall out through the hole leading to a buildup inside the housing. Blowing through the hole in housing after each hole you drill will prevent any problems from this. A more open housing would be a better idea. Second, the edge of the tool that creates the counterbored recess for the screw head isn’t remotely sharp so it just scrapes material away rather than cutting it. This leaves the edge of the hole messy and requires much more time to drill than it really should. It also creates a lot of heat in the tool so clearing those chips mentioned earlier can be a bit painful. Finally, the drill itself is quite a bit longer than necessary. This isn’t a really big deal but it’s fairly annoying when trying to predrill a board before lifting it into place.

This tool is exactly what I was looking for! When I was looking for screws I came across this tool and was hesitant to spend the money on it but it makes the installation of my facia boards on my deck look great! It is easy as drilling a hole anddoes not mark up the board. I don’t know how many materials this will be effective on but I’m certainly going to try to use it in other projects using wood rather than drilling a countersink hole with a traditional bit.
