Yeah, this is the real deal, probably the BEST auto punch I have ever used. If you always wanted a PUNCH that could handle just about any gauge metal you throw at it, this is it. It certainly is not cheap, but is high quality. One thing though: when set to full strength impact, you better eat your Wheaties cause it aint for the faint of heart to push down hard enough to make it fire. Takes some muscle and multiple uses can hurt your palm. Just sayin. If you dont need this much power, get a lower powered punch.

The Starrett automatic center punch has the same high quality as all other Starrett tools I have ever owned. It is a little stiff to use when adjusted for full impact but creates a nice little punch mark where you want it. I can highly recommend this item.

Almost gave up on this. The punch arrived a few days ago and I could not get the stroke adjustment to work. Assuming it might be defective I returned it - I was tempted to use a vice and pliers to see if the top would turn but thought this might damage it and a new product shouldnt arrive jammed like this. Sure enough the replacement would not turn eitehr - so into the vice with soft jaws and use and use some tape to protect from the pliers teeth. Didnt take much and now it works! But no way either of them would turn by hand and I tried pretty hard. I guess some bodybuilder works at the factory? Love the tool - well built - its replacing my General Tool punch I left out in the rain by mistake and that was already damaged (tip falling out)

I had a Brown and Sharpe 770 that I liked a lot but it failed with an internal fatigue crack after long use. I wanted something of comparable quality so Starrett was the obious choice. When this punch came in I noted it was quite a bit smaller so I was concerned that it might not make the clear punch marks I was used to. Those concerns were quickly dispelled. This is even better. The end cap has to be unscrewed a bit to allow it to work with reasonable pressure. The punch marks are clear and deep. I have no doubt this will last for many years. It is a bit pricey but quality tools cost money

Starrett is one of the great names in American precision measuring and tooling products, and this Automatic Center Punch is no exception. A few years ago, they changed the design of the center punches where the shank and the tip are unitized, meaning you have many more opportunities to sharpen the tip before you require a replacement. Its not as elegant as the original design, but it is more robust, and has one less part to worry about(the replaceable tip) I now have the 18C, and have the original 18A and 18AA. This is by far the heaviest duty unit of the three, and will likely get the most use. It is adjustable, however, even the lightest setting is still quite hard, so if you are working with soft metals or thin gauge stock, you will likely want to use the 18A or 18AA. This one is perfect for my use, and I will now be selling off my General automatic center punch, which takes significantly more pressure to activate and doesnt hit nearly as hard.

If you appreciate quality tools you just cant go wrong when buying a Starrett tool. When you need to mark out placement for a hole to be drilled these make it a snap. Position the tip where you need to drill your hole and give the tool a quick push till it pops and youre done. But, dont be a doofus and hit it with a hammer and then do use a center punch and a hammer to give your drill bit a good solid starting point. This tool is only meant to mark placement for a hole and is not meant to replace a center punch. Use this fine Starrett tool properly and its most likely gonna still be workin the same as when it first came outta its box every time you use it.

This marking punch packs a wallop. It leaves a deep centering mark in the hardest steel. A great tool.
