There is no way I can explain this one to the general public. This is a unix server in a very small box, awesome. It allows you to manage Ubiquitis wireless network (not to mention their surveillance system). Another product you should consider is the Ubiquiti Security/Gateway allowing you instantanous statistics on your current internet utilizations. It showed me I didnt need 200mbps to run my home so I down graded to 50mbps creating a saving of $20 bucks per month. Now that is slick.

This thing is fragile and esoteric- various things have to be on the same network (not mentioned at all in the instructions), various things have to be wiped and reset to the factory configurations. For an items thats supposed to abstract away the complexity of dealing w/ a lot of this, I would say this is not a strong delivery. If youre thinking of buying this, I would read their page on Device Adoption (Id include the URL but then Amazon will ding this review)- and if that sounds great to you, then its probably a food fit.

Purchased a UAP-AC-HD (which I really like) but noticed that I was unable to fully configure it via the IOS app (wanted to enable roaming across three APs and make a few other tweaks). So I ordered up one of these Unifi Cloud Keys and wow, what a complete joke. First off, it took me FOREVER just to gain access to this thing. It wants to use your online profile credentials to access the device. For some reason, it wasnt liking my login information. Then, I had the task of trying to figure out how to adopt my AP into this thing (from what I saw, you cant add in an already configured AP). After finally getting my AP added in, I found that I was constantly being bombarded with notifications in the dashboard that so and so cant be seen until I add some sort of controller? After 2 hours of screwing around with this thing, I finally gave up. I couldnt even figure out how to change the SSID of the AP I added in! If Ubiquity wasnt so damn concerned about sucking every last dollar out of you by making all these unnecessary gadgets, they could have just added in a web UI and called it a day. Instead they force their customers to buy garbage like this and waste countless hours trying to figure out how to do the simplest of tasks. This thing is WOOOOOOOOOORTHLESS!!!

Fantastic. As with all ubiquiti unifi equipment, this isnt built for joe consumer, you need to know what you are getting into. But if you have a unifi network up and running with the software based controller, spend the $80 and get one of these, youll love it. Per the usual unifi style, the installation instructions are relatively useless for moving a configuration over to the new controller. Here is what I did: a) upgrade your software controller to the newest version b) backup your configuration c) follow instructions to connect to the unifi cloud key. Pay careful attention to which password it is asking you for / which you are setting, as you configure both your ubnt.com login (if you havent set one up, so you can log into the cloud key from outside your network) and the local administrator account on the cloud key. d) update the unifi cloud key to the newest version of the controller (should match the version you upgraded to in step a) e) shut down your software controller f) log in to the cloud key (it should be at the default 192.168.1.236. I cant even imagine the pain involved if you want a different subnet, I gave up when I put my unifi security gateway (USG) in) g) restore the backup file from step b to the cloud key h) wait. Initially I got some managed by other controller errors but those eventually cleared and the cloud key adopted all the unifi devices on my network (Thankfully, I have 9, having to manually forget and adopt those would have been a pain) Dont forget to turn on deep packet inspection, its cool.

This device is a must if you run any Ubiquiti Unifi device. It is essentially a tiny always-on web server that runs the Unifi Controller software. Trust me, youll need this. Dont be bothered with running the same (and free) software on a Windows PC. The PC version is very unstable, and it is hard to set up. As of this writing, the PC software does not work with JRE 9. I had to downgrade Java to version 8 on my Windows 10 PC. The PC software also requires manual opening up ports on Windows Firewall, but there is no documentation on which ports need to be opened. Even after much hassle to get it working, it will only run for a while before crashing. This device here, on the other hand, provides the same functionality, but it is plug-and-play. It is always on. Rock solid for a week since I started it up. It manages all of the Unifi devices on the same network. Since it is always on, it collects statistics of each device and connected client. For its price and what it does, it is a great value.

When it works, its great. However, any time there is a power outage the key gets corrupt and I lose all WiFi. Its necessary to reset and reinstall from a backup. People in the Unifi community seem to think I should buy a gas generator so the power doesnt go out and corrupt the key.... This seems a bit silly. Ive had many other routers and switches that work just fine after a power outage. UPDATE: Bought a UPS so power outage wouldnt be a problem. Still having issues with the cloud key going offline on its own. Nothing but problems.
