Drill America 3/8-16 UNC High Speed Steel Tap Set

Performed as expected.

Package arrived, but not as described. A sleeve sized for one tap was labeled for a set. Only the taper tap was in the sleeve. Processed a return Some other sizes ordered were OK.

I’m new to the hobby and broke a tap I purchased from another seller fairly quick so I thought I’d experiment with the set. I’m using a 1/16th to bore out the post and getting beautiful threads. I refer to the set as a cutter, a rough and a finish. I’m using the cutter and rough as often as I can, but some of the posts are so shallow I use the finish because the others won’t bite. I’ve got a dozen cars done already and see these taps working for easily double, triple, who knows how many more.

Only one tap is a bottom tap. The other two are standard tapered taps.

I needed 1/4-28 taps to refresh threads for stainless steel hardware on my boat. The hardware used 1/4-28 set screws to hold pieces of railing together. The box I received indicated 1/4-28 taps. After re-tapping the holes, I found that the set screws would no longer go in all the way. Then I checked the taps themselves. All 3 were 1/4-20 taps, not 1/4-28. Horrors, after I had already used them.

One of the taps (the bottoming tap) fell out of the box some time before it got put into the bubble-bag for shipping. If I had _really_ needed the bottom tap I would have raised an issue with the seller but the other two taps did the job for me (it was a through-hole that I ended up using in both cases). Perhaps they could make sure that all of the tap boxes are taped before shipping.... NOTE: You do NOT have to send me a replacement tap!!! This is the first time in my life that Ive needed a 4-48 tap. (for storage spots for the little flat & ball-ended tips of a dial indicator and a little electronic height gauge)

These taps DO NOT have the center for using a tap follower as pictured.

The picture show when purchased them 3 different type of tapes. When I received them they all dead front or bottom type tapes. All are 5/8X11.

Apparently there QC is not very astute. The tap packaging was labeled as 1/2-20, however the actual taps in the package. Well they were 1/2-13. Verify the actual item matches the package label, that is the lesson to learn from this.
