This product is seriously good. It saved my life on more than one occasion. It never gave me trouble

I have both the explorer SE+ and this device. For my use case (primarily disaster comms via connected iPhone) I’d buy this in preference to the more expensive unit with its color display.

Expensive for what you get plus Garmin hits you with “activation fee” before you can even purchase a monthly plan. Highway robbery.

Ive owned this little guy for almost three years; never have had any issues sending or receiving messages or weather updates. Pairing it with an iPhone makes it a lot easier to use; never had issues connecting it to my iPhone. The basic plan is super affordable and is easy to switch on and off. I dont know why anyone who does any serious hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, etc. would not buy one of these.

This thing is great. Ive managed to send texts from inside my tent. Sometimes it does take a while though. Also the battery goes fast if you leave it on. Its more of a turn it on when you need it type of device. I use a Garmin instinct for gps. The inreach is more of a safety and communication device. Its also nice for checking the weather.

Garmin customer support is world class for no support. I am not the first to complain about activating this device. Since they deactivated my Delorme inreach (they bought Delorme) and wont support my prior device I figure its a matter of time before the unsupport this one. That said, the registration is redundant and time consuming and needlessly complex. For example they charge $.10 per ping on some plans. I want to shut off the pings all together but the web site wont answer this simple question. If I search the website for plans it can not find them. So beware. Once the bugs are work out I hope the product works. I am getting reports from the PCT facebook class of 2018 that there are areas that these dont work causing loved ones to worry needlessly.

I love the idea of this device but in execution is is very s l o w... It can take 15 to 20 minutes to get a message out and confirmation back, thus negating any functional use of their manned SOS features. It has problems getting a satellite connection, even in a very open sky. If I had an emergency in even a lightly wooded area I am concerned that the SOS request might not make it out. And finally, following all the instructions for a firmware update from Garmin my unit became nonfunctional and even their factory reset did not work. The unit was 14 months old (2 months out of warrantee) so they kindly, yup, those were the support staffs actual words, kindly shipped me a replacement. The replacement was an obviously well used and worn refurbished unit. I dont know how long it will last but it seems to me that if your update bricks my unit unrecoverable it is not unreasonable for me to expect you to repair it or replace it with a unit of similar value. Live and learn. Dont make my mistake, look elsewhere.
