Greater than one weekAny genuine history making an appearance in They Died With Their Boots On must be there as an accident. Warner Brothers studio in the late 1930s and early 1940s perfected the art of making historical films that were virtually entirely divorced from the history of the real world that they supposedly portray -- and most of them seemed to star Errol Flynn. They Died With Their Boots On was the last gasp of the old Custer as noble knight mythology that had lingered on since the 10th century (and soon to be replaced by the equally erroneous modern mythology that Custer was a murderous idiot). Almost every historical incident presented in the film is fictional. No, Custer was NOT promoted to general by accident. No, Custer did not attack the Indian camp to save Crooks infantry army (Crook had actually fought the Lakota and Cheyennes a week before Custer, and Crook commanded more cavalry than Custer did). But it is nonetheless great, thrilling fun with excellent character actors in supporting roles (no, Uncle Phil Sheridan did NOT command West Point before the Civil War).

> 3 dayAs in all Errol Flynns movies, this actor shows his ebullience and wisdom in his acting roles which enhance the films authenticity and entertainment value. Like his predecessors in the 1950s-1960s era, Flynn continued to portray truthfulness and loyalty as the hero who believes in himself to further the cause of justice. The character of General Custer is well portrayed by Flynn who dwells into the dualistic nature of man - showing the strengths and weaknesses - courage, confidence and ingenuity as the great soldier versus - insecurity and helplessness - as the civilian citizen.

> 3 dayTDWTBO is a terrific movie and always a must-see whenever it appears on cable. Errol Flynn is at his best in the role of General Custer and Olivia de Havilland is perfectly cast as his devoted wife, Libbie. Much is made of the films many historical inaccuracies, as if its unique in that regard. This film is no different than Oliver Stones JFK or Shelton Spike Lees Malcolm X. But those two blowhards regard their films as historically accurate -- which is laughable. Enjoy TDWTBO, for what it is: a rousing, swashbuckling adventure movie with heartwarming love-story as a subplot. So just relax and enjoy what was one of the top grossing movies of 1942, folks. Its a great MOVIE.
