They Died With Their Boots On is a very good semi-biography about George Armstrong Custer. The movie follows him from his adventurous West Point days through his time in the Civil War and then as the leader of the heroic Seventh Cavalry. At some points, the story slows down a bit, but it is still an entertaining film. The action scenes are pretty good with the massacre at the Little Big Horn standing out as the best. Many of the things portrayed in the movie may not be the most accurate, but this does not take away from the story which flows along pretty well. However, the last 30 minutes do have a much darker tone as the Seventh Cavalry marches into glory.

Just two words or just two names sum up this movie - Flynn and de Havilland. What more need be said sayeth the Bard...

although loosely based on the early life of George C.Custer, and then his later command of the 7th Calvary, it was only purchased because my mother repeatedly requested it. she likes it and that is all that matters. sometimes we watch it together and sometimes not.

My husband, sons and myself enjoyed this movie, although Im a bit embarrassed to say that I found myself saying Wow--I didnt know it happened that way! (it didnt). My only complaint is that, whereas I usually enjoy colorized movies, I found the colorization of this movie to be a bit distracting. Colors often bled into areas where they didnt belong. In one main character the face was skin colored, but the facial scruffiness was in black and white (although not completely consistently). I understand why this version of the movie has not been made into a DVD. The colorization quality is too poor.

As in all Errol Flynns movies, this actor shows his ebullience and wisdom in his acting roles which enhance the films authenticity and entertainment value. Like his predecessors in the 1950s-1960s era, Flynn continued to portray truthfulness and loyalty as the hero who believes in himself to further the cause of justice. The character of General Custer is well portrayed by Flynn who dwells into the dualistic nature of man - showing the strengths and weaknesses - courage, confidence and ingenuity as the great soldier versus - insecurity and helplessness - as the civilian citizen.

Critics and historians stated that this is the most historically correct movie of Custer and the Little Big Horn event. Follows the Military transcripts and received high accuracy points. We are in a rewrite history mode. These brave men suffered and died for our country and peace.

Forget about of the historical inaccuracies (specially in the final scenes)... SON OF THE MORNING STAR has a much better Little Big Horn reenactment.
