> 3 dayI had to restore my OS to factory settings (Hard drive failure I think). I upgraded to the 2tb Samsung solid state and put snow leopard (original OS) on it. Worked fine except it was so old I couldnt use the internet or app store. I was not able to upgrade to El Capitan using the thumb drive. I kept getting failure messages. I had to backup my info and erase the new hard drive and then install the OS on it. That worked well. I am now running El Capitan with all updates and its great! Plus I now have a bootable backup with the thumb drive. I may eventually upgrade further - although it sounds like anything newer requires some additional software patches.

> 3 dayThe file was no problem but the stick only had enough room for the file, not enough room to xpand the system on the same stick. I had to expand on another external HD.

> 3 dayI restored a 2011 Mac Mini to a clean El Cap system; it was a simple as rebooting with the stick in the USB slot.

Greater than one weekPlugged this into Macbook and attempted startup. Admittedly, I made a mistake at this step and it did not work.
