SAM Rolled Splint 36, Orange/Blue

Seems great; hope I never have too use it but Im glad I have it on my offshore sailboat. With sailing time to a port being sometimes hours instead of minutes, great for a sailboat first aid kit. Surprisingly small package.

I have used SAM splints in the emergency health field for many years. They have never failed to impress. Easy to use and compact.

I bought my SAM splint for first aid backpacking. Luckily, no one in my group has so much as gotten a bad ankle sprain, so Im still waiting for the opportunity to try it out. Its really hard to say how well a splint will work without actually having someone injured to use it on. After all, theres a *big* difference between just strapping this thing on your leg when youre hale and hardy, and trying to imagine what it would be like if you had a horrendous strain or a fracture. That being said, I do think the splint will do its job if its ever called to. It seems reasonably stiff when bent, and its moldable to various body parts and shapes. My extremely unscientific experiments on myself confirms that this is, in every possible way, superior to my previous sticks and bandanna or hiking poles and bandanna splints, which, if Im being honest, are pretty terrible. One thing I do like about this is that its very easy to get out of the way in pack. I just fold it in half length-wise and shove it in my water-bladder pouch. That way I always know exactly where it is in case I do need it.

Have not had a need to use this yet but its a must in my first aid prep kit. These splints are easy to unroll and cut out to the right size to provide the necessary support when a splint is needed.
