This is a great desk top scanner. It does have a learning curve, which means you can expect to do some learning! My experience with software called FreeSCAN and RadioReference.com made set-up SO much easier. A 1-yr subscription to RadioReference is $60 at this time, well worth it as it does make set-up using FreeSCAN much easier! All in all, No Regrets, as the scanner price on Amazon is VERY good. Im in a low spot, still reception has not been an issue. The sound quality is good, but there is always room for improvement. Otherwise, no complaints. It is complex, yet doable with some patience and flexibility.

Thank you to Police Scanner Outlet first. I thought this was a fair price. I found it is a great price. I like this radio better than the ones with all the WIFI and SD card stuff. I had the BCD396xt and the BCD996xt and now I have the BCD996P2. It is running well. Our tower just changed to Phase 2. MPSCS So Im ready. The 996xt, 396xt, and 996P2 are very good radios. I compare them to the tip line. I also have RS651, PSR600, RS106 and others to compare them to. I had all I needed to start off running from Police-SCANNER-outlet. Get yours next. Thanks PSO. Oh Im a ham radio op. and I know the radios that get what I want to hear...New Radio Is Top Right

While this scanner is not the most complex thing ever designed it does take time to understand and learn. Uniden has made a poor job trying to make sense of the terminology that this scanner uses, but once you trial and error you’ll understand it. My recommendation is to use RadioReference for information about scanners as well as this one. My last point is to avoid Priority Mode unless you actually know what it’s purpose is, and colour code your frequencies if you use a lot.

Ive had more experience with Whistler/Grecom so I was curious to try a Uniden. This is their flagship mobile/desktop scanner unless you want their dumbed-down Home Patrol version. Im impressed with the RF performance but the digital P25 performance is relatively poor. P25 calls range from mildly garbled to nearly unintelligible. The BCD992P2 also has trouble following P25 communications often truncating or completely muting the audio. For those who think Im just being hard on Uniden, a Whistler 1098 on the same discone antenna has done FAR better delivering intelligible audio on the exact same traffic. There are also multiple YouTube videos documenting the same thing. Im also disappointed in all the missing features and weird user interface of the Uniden. Whos bright idea was it to define everything around Quick Keys apparently just to be different? A Whistler can log hit counts into the scanner memory while you just let it scan for days if you want. You can then easily sort for the most active channels. That seems a bit too advanced for Unidens firmware people as I havent found any equivalent feature. The Freescan software will log hits on your PC but you cant use the resulting list to edit anything directly in the scanner. For analog use this seems to perform similarly to my Whistler scanners and might have somewhat better RF performance (less susceptible to overload/intermod). For digital it seems to really struggle. And, regardless, the user interface, programming, etc. is generally less intuitive and less capable. Uniden vs Whistler each have their advantages and disadvantages. For me, Unidens poor digital performance and arcane user interface make it the inferior choice. Uniden needs to at least match Whistlers digital performance and come up with a user interface that doesnt seem like it was designed by aliens from another planet.

awesome scanner pain to set up and understand as a beginner but loads of fun you will want to throw this thing if you are new to scanners it takes patience to learn its a awesome scanner indeed it wasnt super hard to use freescan to program it ... the software makes it faster to program then the crazy menu but it can be programed either way side note youtube videos helpped me solve some of the hair pulling stress of it ... freescan is easy to use its the scanner controls that are a pain so far but takes time some stuff honestly isnt in the 100 or so page manual of the silly thing its ok though this is my first scanner and i managed to program trunked analog so far it took me 20minutes to do but im used to tinkering with hand held radios if your completely new to this just stick to the home patrol series of radios very simpler to program or pay to get it programed cause its complex comes with edacs free from uniden now i did a firmware update and it came free i read some were its free now so thats cool

Took watching a few videos for my husband to get the channels programmed, but the sound is great, and he enjoys hearing the calls as he works in the shop.

If this is your first digital, pray for patience. I thought I was prepared. Had watched a lot of videos on programming but it still took a while. First just go ahead and pay the subscription for radio reference. Before you receive it, find free scan and the driver for the scanner. If after you install the driver the computer won’t recognize the the scanner. Turn the scanner off and back on. It’s funny how those few words took so long to to learn. The reason I gave it 5 stars for ease of use is because any frustration I was having was just because of inexperience. Now I love it. Now the filing system makes sense. When you first import from radio reference use your username and not your email. No when you import from the p25 system, to me it was messy. But it was working. So I took time and learned how to put together a more organized system. I like being able to record the feeds, and this past weekend while running the sound through the computer I was able to listen through Bluetooth. Hope this helps and hope y’all have a blessed day.

I didnt care for the fact that the radio arrived to me with an older firmware version. The first thing I had to do with the radio was update the firmware myself. Other than that issue I really like the radio a lot. Perhaps in the future the firmware version can be shown before purchase is made. Thank you for listening. GC
