I got these about a year ago and only tried to set them up now. These plugs have a minor weird caveat. They may come shipped with outdated firmware - at least if you get one from last year. Because of this, you will have problems connecting these to your network. These smartplugs require your 2.4 Ghz band of your router, which all routers have. Additionally, the big caveat to these HS103s is that they require you to TEMPORARILY turn on WPA Personal. WPA Personal is no longer recommended for use in home networks because theyre easy to break into, just like WEP is. WPA2 is considered the bare minimum nowadays for security. However, these plugs, for whatever reason, cant connect to a WPA2 or higher network, even the app tells you not to set it to WPA3 (which some newer routers support). You will have to set your 2.4 Ghz network security to WPA Personal (or WPA-1) and the algorithm to TKIP/AES. If you do this, the plugs will connect fine. And luckily, once you get these plugs added to your network account, they will immediately start downloading the latest firmware. The update process takes less than a minute each plug, and after the firmware update they will have 100% compatibility with your WPA2 network. Its best if you bought a 2 or 4 pack of these to set them up all at once so you can get the firmware on them updated and youll only have to set your network to WPA-1 ONCE. After the firmware is updated you can always reset the settings for future use since its the firmware thats the most important part of these plugs. The HS105s you can buy here or at Best Buy already come with the necessary firmware and are capable of handling 15 Amps. The HS103s look practically the same as the HS105s (slightly smaller) but can only handle 10 Amps. However there are slightly cheaper EP10s floating around that can handle 15 Amps as well and look almost the same as the 103 and 105 and can be bought in a 4 pack for much cheaper. Keep an eye on the models you can buy - there are several different ones that have very similar features. The lower amp models are cheaper and are generally handy for simple things like desk fans, lights, etc. but if youre using these to power something that uses more amps, you may want to look for the models that support higher amperage. The featureset of all these different yet similar looking models are exactly the same. The Kasa app is really well made, great and clean interface and easy to navigate.

I have used the (2) smart plugs on a few occasions to turn lights on and off when I was away from home. Last week while I was gone from home there was a local power outage and the plugs did not come back online (while other wifi devices did so). I was unable to connect with the plugs from a distance or when I returned home. When I got home I pulled one of the plugs from the outlet and immediately reinserted it. It then connected to wifi and my iPhone along with the other one which I did not touch upstairs. I contacted the company and spoke to someone in the Philippines who sent me a link by email to use a beta tester app that deals with bugs. I dont want to play around with this, simply want a plug that is dependable. I then contacted chat support and was informed that it is a weakness of the design. None of the Kasa plugs apparently is immune to this. Well, it is unlikely that I will have another power outage soon but in my mind this is a limitation of the plug. Ive used it to turn on/off lights in the house so that it appears that someone is home. I think Ill use a standard timer for another light as a back-up when I am away from home in the future. Otherwise the plug is great, very easy to use and adjust schedules.

I really like this wifi plug, because it makes any non smart appliance smart, the button on side is really cool because if you lose internet you still have a way to trun on your appliance without having to unplug it, the only Im complaining about is the wifi signal, it is very strong inside the house, but as soon as I go outside, the connection is very very slow bit sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. Other than that I recommend this smart plug 98%

The product does what it says. It turns on or off if you click a button in the app. The app also allows scheduling. But the app does not seem to allow good control of the device (e.g., turn the socket on if a smart bulb installed on the same app is on), which to me is the main point of having a smart device. Since the device does not work with at least one other platform that allows this kind of smart programming (Smart Life app, that Ive been testing), I find its use case very poor in comparison with the competition. And it does not measure power consumption, another big minus. I saw good reviews of this product, including in the Wirecutter, but the limitations of the app are not clear from the product information webpage, so I returned this.

The step in the instruction that is skipped is to turn the lamp on first. OK, maybe I should have known that....but..... They do work.

These plugs work....that’s it, they work. All of the TP Link smart home plugs and Switches work, and work flawlessly that I can see. The Kasa app is great, works flawlessly as well. I have 8 of these so far, and they are mixed in my home with wall switches (TP Link switch and 3 way switches) to all run with Kasa app that is TP link that then works with the Alexa Amazon Echos throughout the home. These things are truly plug and play. You plug them in, open the Kasa App, and add device and bam, its super easy to follow the directions and add to WiFi in the home. Then open Alexa App on the phone and all of these TP Link items are there in the Smart Home section. It just works, and works flawlessly. The entire system, I add Routines and Scenes and you can do all kinds of cool things. In the Alexa App the Routines, I can turn on lights and play the weather on the Echo and then have it start music. I can say Alexa, turn on the Accent Lighting and it turns OFF the ones that I want off and dont think are accent, and turns on the ones I say to turn on, and it is super easy. The Kasa app also has timers as much as you want. You can set turn on and the time, and create as many as you want, and turn off the same. My Christmas lights indoor and outdoor were all on these indoors and the plugs for outdoors are on switches, so bam those all worked on timers there. Same with my patio outdoor lights. The only glitch Ive had in the months of using these......I switched Broadband Providers from Uverse to Spectrum. The new WiFi router, I set up the SSID to the exact same, same password, and it should have all just connected and never had a glitch. After 2 hours of weirdness, and trying to reset one of them, and get the TP Link to work.....I spent more time online and realized these are 2.4Ghz ONLY. I had set up the 5Ghz Wifi to be the original. I went in and made the 2.4G the old one, and BAM, everything worked FLAWLESSLY again. So, the 5Ghz wave I made the SSID-5G and all was right with the world once again, ha. My wife said this was silliness......she also said that when I got our first DVR 20 years ago......now the DVR is full of HGTV.....and she admits these things are great.

I like TP Link products, I was able to set up all 3 plugs in 10 minutes. bot some other brand wifi plug and had to return them because I could not connect them. Bot TP link router 5 years ago and still going strong. if I knew TP Link has wifi plug, I would have bot them in the first place, not sure why they brand it as Kasa

I wanted a wifi-enabled coffee maker but all that I found were too large or too expensive. With this device I can start any el-cheapo coffee maker plugged into it, from bed whenever I am ready -- not just when the clock says so. Be sure to develop the habit of remembering to either switch off your coffee maker or filling it with coffee and water first though. There wont be any safeguards against bonehead moves like powering up an empty coffee maker.

Easy enough to setup through the Kasa app. They just work! You can choose whether the ring of light around the built in power button stays on or not.

The set up is super easy. I was able to add it to my alexa, and set up the times I wanted my lights to come on. It connects to your wifi, and you can download the app that goes with it. I ended up adding it to my home app, and set the schedules that way. I love that my lights turn on automatically when Im not home, and then shut off at the time I set it for. You will need Wifi in order to use them as intended. Highly recommend purchasing, and I will be purchasing even more.
