The Beatles - The Beatles white album - Capitol Records - SWBO 101 VG+/VG

This is even better than the Sgt. Pepper box set from last year. The new mix is a lot like the mono version of The Beatles...much more in your face than the previous stereo remaster from about ten years ago. The Esher demos and sessions discs are a delight for any serious fan. Others may be slightly overwhelmed, but The White Album itself is a glorious puzzle anyway. The packaging is also top notch...the book the discs are housed in is perhaps the ultimate book on this sprawling album.

The book is nice and the CDs are great, but the Blu-ray stops after the second song.

Only reason I bought this was for the 5.1 Blu-ray surround sound but they didnt split up the sounds enough for me. I assumed they were gonna use all 5 speakers to moreso isolate different sounds, like voices more in the front-left speaker; drums, front-right; bass rear-left, etc. They didnt split it up much for the most part which was disappointing and is why Im returning it. Further, they dont explain anything about setting up the 5.1 surround settings for optimal listening. I played it thru my PS3 > Onkyo 7.1 theater receiver and had to totally change the volume settings in the Onkyo to even hear the rear speakers. The 5.1 DTS Blu-ray is really the only new thing here and they dont mention how to best enjoy it even though they include a huge, heavy book with lots of pictures and stories about the songs - interesting but really nothing I didnt already know. Where are the instructions on how to set-up the 5.1?

It was a Christmas gift for my grandson. He loves the Beatles and this album was a hit. I think now he has all there albums.
