If you use an old-fashioned straight edge or double-edged safety razor this is about as high quality a shave soap as you can find.

smooth, slick, protecting, almost instant & effortless lather. lather is very creamy, but not excessively stout. seems to lather instantly in either soft or hard water. that scent though. rose + gardenia + dirt. is there a tabacco scent? maybe if tobacco means wet tobacco in a pouch, then maybe, possibly, maybe not. personally i think it smells pretty good, just, not what i call a current rendition of masculine. the warden does not like it though. this is a champion shave though. even if i shave every day, i think this bowl might last about 3 years.

Nice solid ceramic bowl. The scent is somewhat strong but not in a horrible way. Foams up nicer than a few other soaps Ive tried (e.g. Taylor of Bond Street) I prefer a more understated scent but this is fine.

As a shaving soap it lathers very easy and provides plenty of lather for multiple passes. Lather is rich and provides a very slick surface for the DE razor. The only thing I don’t like is the scent. The reviews that note that this smells like an old lady are absolutely correct. I think this is something that you may either love or hate.

I don’t like the scent of Tabac. But now when I smell it I know a wonderful shave is about to happen. People who have Tabac dry out on their face usually have underhydrated the lather. It is a thirsty soap. Underhydrating will diminish slickness and cause your razor to clog more easily. Hydrate that lather. I ignore the scent now because my face feels so great after a Tabac shave. But I certainly don’t use the balm or the aftershave. That is just too much Tabac smell. I just grab a classic aftershave, Proraso green, Speick, Lucky Tiger, Pinaud Clubman, whatever—and it makes the Tabac smell go away instantly. And my face still has that great Tabac post shave feel. Enough guys swear by this stuff, even with its controversial scent profile, that I’d rate it a safe blind buy. I got the Tabac shaving stick first and after many great travel shaves that initial shaving stick is still going strong. There are some guys who will only shave with a stick, and the Tabac stick may be the greatest one out there. It outperforms Speick’s stick, Spain’s La Toja, Turkey’s Arko, Britain’s Derby and even the mighty Palmolive stick. I have so many excellent soaps and creams that I often forget just how great Tabac is. It never fails to remind me when I use it. If you have never used a shaving soap and brush before, why not start with the top of the chain? This stuff lathers better than 90% of the shaving soaps out there. The main mistake guys make is not getting it slick enough by shaving with their lather too dry. Even then you get a good shave, but go for that rich, moisture-laden, slick lather and you will be rewarded. I will always have Tabac in my den somewhere.

I love this Soap! Its easy to build a a lather. And, it always makes a rich creamy, protective lather. The ceramic bowl is the perfect size. It fits into the hand nicely and allows for very easy brush loading. The loose fitting lid allows you to cover the container and still have circulation to air things out. You can then simply set it on your bathroom counter without having unsightly, used soap exposed. Add to this a terrific old-school barbershop scent, and youve got a winner! Definitely in my top five shaving soaps! Everyone doing the traditional wet shave needs to have this as part of their shaving gear! You will not be disappointed!

How many times have I heard myself say that? And admitting that its been around as long as Ii have doesnt help! (Tabac Original came out in 1959, the same year i was born). This is an amazing product! The lather is creamier than anything Ive tried thus far in my (as yet short) wet-shaving history. It loads up in no time, and then I stick it in the scuttle until Im ready for it. When I do, its warm and even creamier, so it covers your beard quickly, and starts to soften the hair immediately. By the time I put the razor to my face, it glides along my face like a downhill skier!

Heavenly lather, as said many times before the scent is hard to define. Manly but subtle would the best description, clean and fresh. At the time of my purchase it was around $16.00 it is a must have at this price if you like to collect soaps and cream. The one odd thing is its not a very slick soap but it gives a fantastic shave. The face feel after the shave is really nice, not drying at all.

Great smelling soap. Lathers okay, not as well as a cream like Taylors of bond street. You whip it up in the container, which is a heavy glass or ceramic. Scent is light and perfectly manly and classic.
