Greater than one weekPretty easy set up and use for a novice. Exactly what I was looking for. I was able to set it up and capture a video the I got it in the mail. I bought this to digitize a fairly large collection of home footage that has varying quality (some grainier, darker, lighter, etc.). Ive had it for about a month now and captured approx. 6 hrs worth of footage. I did end up scraping about 4 hrs worth because Im still playing around with the settings. Thats more my bad though, I should have waited until I had the software figured out. The only real problems Ive had thus far was shipping from the seller, an operator error on my part, and time to capture the footage.

> 3 dayI have used the 5.0 version and it worked fine copying old VHS home movies. I bought this one to use on a computer without a optical drive (cd tray) and could not find online where to download the software. Finally I saw in small print with the link in instructions under the first step. I had missed it earlier and tried to search online. Version 8 has more options, like saving as a media file rather than trying to just burn a CD, and it works well. Quality is mostly dependent on your old VCR.

> 3 dayI have been able to convert many VCR tapes to DVD. Quality is not the best, but it does the job.

> 3 dayHas some issues. First of all I highly recommend getting a video signal booster between your vcr and this device. I had a lot of weird flickering going on. After calling tech support, they said my vcr signal was probably weak and the device does no amplification. Also this makes random ticking noises through your speakers. Doesnt end up on the video but is annoying. And the most annoying part...the final video can be choppy at times even when you dont see it while you are watching. No doubt a product of digitizing the video. Usually at the beginning of the footage, its all black and white and jumpy until the the device figures out how to track. Very annoying!!!!! Hindsight I wish I could have used a DVD/vcr recorder before they discontinued them.

> 3 dayIt does the job really well and I dont have to pay someone to do it for me. It is time consuming to transfer VHS over to computer because it is done in real time but worth it in the end. One thing I have noticed is that it seems to degrade the quality a little bit. The preview window of the video looks better than what the final video quality looks like. Because of this, I docked it a star.

> 3 daySMOOTH AND EASY, thats the way I like it and thats what this delivers. I work in an edit studio where quality is important. I have had a couple converters that give just kinda grainy, shaky transfers (SOny Media Tower, Im looking at you). This one, if you take the time to just read the instructions, installs beautifully first time and does a slam-bang job of transferring whatever Ive fed into in. Some old Hi-8 was first, and it looked pretty darn good. Guys in the room were like, whoa! Were in business! We used S-video cable (not the supplied RCA jacks) for that. Did some VHS, and found that it gives a good transfer, but of course, its not a miracle worker. I had some garbage that is still garbage BUT its not editable in our pro machines where it wasnt just seconds before. Good VHS looks really good. The audio is very good too. No extra hum or hiss added. Operationally its a breeze. Sorry but those reviewers who have reported problems, I just dont get it. This thing does the job with a VERY easy to use interface (duh, push de button get de video). You see the video in the small viewing screen. Controls beneath that. Rewind, well, thats to rewind. Free updates. Sorry, its that simple and works great and stable every time we duh, push de button. Simple! Awesome. Exactly the way I need it to be because I function on a lot of levels with a ;lot of different equipment and just dont need a lot of fussy particulars. Good video from old stuff at last! The version we got, works on both the Mac and windows PC (have 8.1 and Windows 10 here, a disk was provided for each format). By the way, and this will be obvious, make sure you are buying for your type computer (PC or WIndows) if you dont get the one that does both because it absolutely will not work on the wrong system. Sorry for me, first time I didnt push de right button. But they took care of me which is something else I really liked. Real people at work behind the screens and phones. Buy with confidence.

> 3 dayWell made and was simple to connect to computer and VCR. Operations were tricky and I believe if the company had video instructions on their website would help the consumer to use their product to its fullest. I will have to say, I believe I have actually managed to rescue two priceless family VHS videos by converting them to DVD. Fortunately a friend had a VCR I was able to borrow to make this transfer. Honestech VHS to DVD was worth the cost. The final transfer to DVD played right away on my DVD player. Unfortunately I wasnt able to use their Editing option as it either didnt work or I just couldnt figure it out. The Easy Wizard Mode is very basic so I stuck with that.

> 3 dayThe package did great at converting my VHS videos to digital files, although I wish it had an HDMI interface (does anyone still have S-VHS cables?). The short coming I found was in the software to edit the digital files after I converted them so that I could string them together into one DVD video, with chapter breaks and such. I had to get other software to do that. But with the conversion it did great.

> 3 dayprettty good software that works with a lot of windows programs (Vista, Windows 7, windows 10 are what i used.), pretty easy to use. Much cheaper than having someone convert old vhs tape to digital.

> 3 dayI gave this a try after reading mixed reviews. Some people had good luck and some did not. I did not. The video portion works fine, however, audio is a problem. Further, a call to customer service left me thinking they have no idea what they are talking about. The issue is very poor audio quality. As soon as there is a useful (proper) level going into the device it distorts. The software shows strong audio levels when the output of the audio mixer was silent and even when no audio connections are made to the device. Support told me that it will not work with anything other than a camera output or videotape machine output. Come on! Plugging the device into a video deck is going to cause phantom audio levels to go away? When I play back the file with the strong-level audio (as indicated by the software audio meter) there is nothing there. It is silent. I am an audio - video professional and have worked in this position for a couple of decades. I was looking for a low-cost and simple solution for capturing audio and video at our Church and was not concerned with top quality. I at least expected something usable. Personally, I think I received a defective unit. I would have just tried to exchange it for another unit until the call with technical support which left me with no confidence in this company. I will return this unit and probably try the Elgato video capture device. UPDATE 3-7-16 Apparently this review caught the attention of the companys technical support group. The reply illustrates my frustration with the company. For those that like technical detail, read on. This device captures analog audio and video. Video is in the form of standard NTSC via RCA jack input - just like the output of a typical consumer VCR. Audio input is analog unbalanced -10 dBV left and right via RCA jacks - just like the output of a typical consumer VCR. Recording from a VCR is the primary purpose of the device. What I attempted to do with the device was to connect the video to a camera that provided analog NTSC video output. The video recorded properly with the device. Audio was provided via two unbalanced RCA jacks on the tape output of a Mackie audio console at a nominal level of -10dBV - EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE OUTPUT OF THE TYPICAL CONSUMER VCR. The audio level could not be brought up to a usable level without distorting. The audio meter on the device software showed about one bar shy of going into yellow with no signal being output from the audio console. It showed the same with the audio cables disconnected from the device! How is it measuring a strong audio level with nothing connected? Playing back the file recorded with this mysterious signal yielded no audio. The purpose of buying this product was to capture audio and video that was just usable, not high grade. I have worked in audio / video (analog and digital) for over two decades. This includes broadcast, theater, and running an electronics repair business where most of my work was on VCRs. I strongly suspect I had a bad unit or there is something about the Windows 8.1 laptop I was using that it did not like. As noted, I wanted to exchange the device, but I really felt that the technical support person wasnt very interested in helping or in understanding how this was being utilized. The quick reply was that the device would not work with live streams. In the analog world devices like this cannot sense the difference between video and audio coming form a VCR / camcorder or a live camera with audio sourced from a sound board. The video worked - that is the more complicated part of the device. Audio should be simple but that is where the problem is. I have ordered a different device which is basically the same thing (and same price) but from a different manufacturer. I am very eager to test it when it arrives. I really wanted to give this device another try with a replacement unit but the manufacturer showed no interest in this. UPDATE 3-18-16 I ordered and received the Elgato Video Capture device. The connections are the same as the Vidbox VHStoDVD. It works perfectly. After ordering, the price of the VHStoDVD went down and the Elgato Video Capture went up so there is now a price difference. The only thing I dont like about the Elgato is that the audio meters are not present while recording, just in pre-recording setup. Other than that, the audio and video quality are good and it is easy to use.
