> 3 dayIm glad I trusted the ratings on this one! I really, really like this smart plug!!! Im not easily impressed, nor do I usually take the time to write one of these amazon reviews. So the fact that I am writing one now says something, in and of itself. Let me provide some specifics: this Kasa KP400 smart plug was easier to install than any others I have, including the actual Amazon ones. It has yet to disconnect itself from the network or fail to work correctly (again, better than Amazons own offerings). The timers and sun up/down programs have worked perfectly and it has not failed to follow a single, Alexa-given, command (once more, even better than the actual Amazon plugs)! I like that I can program it through its own (user-friendly) app or through the Alexa app. It has integrated perfectly into my lighting system (hello, Amazon. You taking notes?). I also like that it protrudes outward a bit, so as to not block the other, unused socket. I love that it is outdoor rated, handles a good load (without even remotely heating up), and has that green color that blends in. Additionally, I havent had to return it (after a short time) for issuing a weird error message that Amazon customer service translates to its dead and must be replaced. (Are you listening Amazon? You could learn a few things for your plugs from Kasa!) I not only recommend the Kasa KP400, without reservation, but will likely purchase another one myself (and maybe one for my aging parents). As for the few bad ratings, look: its always possible for one defective unit to get missed by the factorys quality control, or to have an issue with your wifi network. However, if you give Kasa/Amazon a chance to replace it, and if youve set up your coverage right (a lot of folks blame tech for their mistakes), I dont think you can go wrong with the KP400. If you think Im being overly generous and just dont believe me, try it yourself! The worst that can happen is you end up returning it and lose a day or so waiting on an alternative. But I am betting you be as please with it as I am am. So I say: good on ya Kasa! I will be trying some of your other offerings. Especially since the longevity, and functionality, of the Amazon smart plugs seems short-lived.

> 3 dayI am using this to control a gutter heat cable. I’ve only had to use it once so far and it worked just fine using my phone to control it remotely. Much better than having to go outside and manually plug something in or turn something on. The plug cover broke off but that doesn’t affect functionality. Deducted one star for that though.

> 3 dayI like that I can have Alexa turn on my outdoor lights at night...Before I get home and have to stumble around in the dark. It was so easy to set up...I had to buy another one!

> 3 dayJust put 36 Enbrighten café lights on my patio because they are commercial-grade for outside and have a lifetime warranty. However, they are too bright and I had no idea they were marked as non-dimmable. I got this plug in hope it would make some difference and it does!! You have to set the calibrator on the very lowest and then set to 0% but now they are perfect! They are connected to a switch inside and when I turn off and on they stay at the same low level. Absolutely saved me from having my neighbors complain!! Thank you!

30-03-2025At first there were some issues with the updates and connecting, and I thought Id need to return it, but it ended up working great. Lots of smart options built into this inexpensive device.

> 3 dayLet’s face it - if you’re interested in buying this. You’re probably interested in setting up some outdoor string lights that you’d like to dim, and more importantly add to something like home assistant. You’ll probably never dim the lights, and once you set up a automation probably never touch that either. But it’s all about setting it up and getting it to work right? It’s not like your wife is going to be super excited by how the string lights can be set at different brightness levels for different people outside :) With all that out the way. This is actually smaller than expected, but with the smaller size comes a smaller cord. So you’ll to decide if you want this hanging off your outside outlet or drop in an extension cord. It also connect super easily (local) through to home assistant. Where you can quickly set it up to act as a light entity. Then all the really nerdy stuff of setting up pointless automations can begin. Overall - I’d recommend it - just probably not going to be the coolest thing your wife has seen.

> 3 dayI had a Smart Home long before the words even existed. My entire house was controlled by a sophisticated programmable multi-channel X10 console so indoor and outdoor lighting went on and off, dimmed, and responded to triggering devices. This was pre-wifi so everything used the houses electrical power lines. These days things are almost exactly the same except now everything is wireless and can be controlled by Alexa or my smartphone from anywhere in the world. When I first jumped aboard the smart plug and switch bandwagon there were only a handful of brand names selling the hardware – Kasa by TP Link, Wemo by Belkin, and Leviton. Their products were similar and pricey and they all shared my number one complaint about the entire product category, that their products would only work using their proprietary smartphone app. If you mixed brands you had to download an app from each company, there wasn’t (and still isn’t) any standardized app that can control any brand smart switch. Then the cheap offshore knockoffs came along and introduced several problems, the biggest of which is that these companies have the life of a fruit fly, they’re here one day and gone the next with no app, no support and no service, meaning that their switches and plugs end up in the garbage. All that being said, I will only buy Kasa plugs and switches. Their app is by far the best and their hardware is well made, versatile and dependable. I am excited about this one, finally a weatherproof outdoor smart plug that is even better than I expected because it has two separate channels. The two plugs are at the end of a short heavy duty grounded power cord that plugs into one outlet. It is designed to hang downward to prevent rain and other weather from touching the switched power plugs. There are two buttons on the switch to give the user local control without using the app. The unit comes with one cable clamp to help keep the plug secured and help prevent it from accidentally being pulled out of the power outlet. This plug, like all Kasa products works seamlessly with Alexa and setup is mostly automatic. From box to fully setup took me about five minutes. In my opinion Kasa is probably the most compatible brand I’ve used with Alexa Echo devices. You might pay a few cents more for a trusted brand name but I think it’s worth it. TP Link has been around for a long time and I’ve always been happy with their products. This outdoor dual smart plug is genius and I highly recommend it.

> 3 dayUpdate: Bought 2 of these about a week or so apart. 2nd unit failed within 6 weeks. Kept outdoors underneath a deck. It wasnt in any direct water contact. Re-ordered it. Lets see if my original lasts longer. Ive had the original Kasa plugs left outdoors that arent even rated for outdoor use last me several years in an enclosed electrical box. Hopefully it was just a fluke. When I came across this products page. I immediately got intrigued due to its ability to natively control dimming of dumb lights. I wanted it specifically for my outdoor string lights in the backyard. Well, i went immediately to KASAs product page and started a chat with support. KASA support gave me false information. They stated it does support dimming in SmartThings, Alexa, or Google Home. Only controllable via Kasa app. Well that agent was completely wrong. The plug controls dimming natively in all 3 platforms including the KASA app. I was able to setup routines in SmartThings (webcore) and Alexa that controls dimming functionality. All in all, this is a fantastic smart-plug to control outdoor lighting. And its outdoor rated.
