Update March 2019 - It has not started sending those alerts as I complained in the review below. Overall,I am satisfied with the performance of this device. I believe there is a lot of room to make improvements such as allow customers to setup custom notifications depending upon cycle length, # of cycles, time of day etc.. But overall I am satisfied and will rate it at 4 starts... for This unit doesnt alter for any sump pump malfunctions as it claims. It only monitors if sump pump is consuming electricity or not and just monitoring for how long or often it runs for. It doesnt even do the basic check of if pump normally runs for 30 seconds and t it gets stuck is one time it gets stuck and keep running for 15 minutes, it never picks up that. It has happened to me multiple times now, it never sends any alerts at all. To me its the most basic alert that it needs to send right away... Its waste of $150 for nothing....

I have two sumps in our basement, with water sump backup on one, and whole house generator. We have a fair amount of groundwater in our neighborhood, so they run fairly often, especially when it rains. Have had to replace sumps every few years over last 19 years of living here due to frequency of use, but even with redundancy of two interconnected pits, would always have to rely on noticing one was not working. With these devices, now get alerts with power disruption, sump failure with water level sensor, and also feedback on how often they are running. This is great piece of mind, and superior to an alarm you might miss. Only glitch in installation was ease of reset button, which after direct tech assistance, discovered you need a sewing needle pushed in fairly far to reset. Paper clip, tooth pick or finishing nail wont do. I wish direct tech support was available without having to leave email, but when needed to troubleshoot, call back was very helpful and much appreciated.

Terrible customer support. I’ve never had any follow up after emailing and leaving multiple messages. The app isn’t working correctly and does not give correct measurements. It also shuts off for no reason.

I initially reviewed Pump Spy 5 stars but took down my review when they took away the software monitoring. That was not smart at all. After they received numerous complaints on Amazon they restored Pump Spy. Now I love Pump Spy again! I would even pay them $10/year for this service which I would not blame them for doing. At least they would add software features and make the product even better. Any more than this I would not be happy. Unfortunately, my guess, they now limit Pump Spy history to about 3 months. I miss my long term history. Why not make it available for download to a spreadsheet? Not the end of the World. Sure its a little tough to connect to wifi when power goes out or something like that but with patience you can figure out. Perhaps some people have problems with signal in basement - I added a cheap wifi extender to solve this issue.

I had been looking for a way to know when the sum pump in our Crawlspace was running, so I would not worry that I would one day find the crawlspace flooded, and not have to go down there (very low crawlspace) too often. When I came across PumpSpy, it looked like the perfect solution, so I got one and installed it, and it did not disappoint. Feature wise, it does exactly what I needed plus more, it allows me to see all the cycle times and duration, bringing me peace of mind during storms without having to go down there. It also allows me to know if my Sum pump is properly sized (not cycling) too often. Bonus is the Flood sensor. By including a float sensor that you place just above the pump, I will be alerted if the water rises abnormally, indicating the pump is not running or is failing to cope with the rain. Installation was reasonably simple, I did run into a small problem on a recent android (v9) device that could not connect to the outlet Wi-Fi network during setup. Using an older android phone running android 6 fixed that issue. Hopefully PumpSpy will fix that. Now after using it for a few weeks, I have a few suggestions for improvement in case PumSpy reads these. 1. Use Local weather station rain information to trigger alerts. Usually pump activity is directly related to a raining event, and the pump cycling is proportional to the amount of rain. It would be nice for the application to monitor rain amount at every location using local weather station, and compare them to pump cycles to establish a baseline for cycle’s frequency versus rain. By doing that you could trigger an alert if the cycle’s frequency fall out of range. Cycles when there is no rain would alert for a possible leak, abnormally low or hi cycles when raining point to a change in the situation… If you ever do that, it would be nice to be able to specify a Personal weather station from Weather Underground to use as the source for the precipitation amount. For example, smart sprinkler systems like the Rachio 3 allow users to specify such a local personal Weather station to know when it rains locally, and delay or turn off irrigation. 2. Give us the ability to download the pump data. This would be really nice to help establish baseline for situations when the pump runs Include all the data in that download like power draw and such 3. App enhancements • Add the frequency or time interval in the historical data on each cycle line. Knowing how often the pump cycle in a given storm intensity is the most important aspect of knowing everything is fine. Although we can figure it out with the time, it would make it a lot easier to see at a glance. • Add the ability for notifications like Flood to trigger an actual alarm, with settings for Alarm duration, number of repeat and time interval. It is easy to miss a notification, and a flood alarm is not something you want to miss. 4. Small things • Fix the Time zone mismatch on the historical data • Add an arrow to the historical cycle line in the app to indicate you can drill down further. But all in all, great job on the product!!

Update 11/2022 They restored the pump cycle history and updated the iOS app interface recently. I like it just fine ( again). The notifications of internet loss and restore , high level etc are very reliable and useful. Expensive… but it’s a great product. They removed the 60 day in latest app release. Now you have no idea how your pump is operating or how much water it is processing. Their tech support will not respond to requests concerning this issue. Total fraud and now a useless product. Do Not Buy !!!!

My situation: Years ago, I had a 14 inch flood in my finished basement. Now, I have 2 sump pits. The one in the front of the basement runs less often but I still need to know what is going on. The one in the back of the basement has high volumes of water. I have 2 1/2 horsepower Zoeller pumps. I recently replaced both Zoeller pumps. The float switches last around 10 years. But as I started to examine the conditions in the basement, I realized that I would like a little more protection and I wanted to have a better understanding of what exactly is going on down there. So, I read about this PumpSpy Smart Outlet and realized that it could be a nice addition to my system. So, I bought 2 of them. Installation: Basically, you plug in the PumpSpy Smart Outlet into an existing outlet and male pump plug into the top female receptacle on the PumpSpy Outlet. It lights up in Yellow for set-up mode. Then you download the PumpSpy Android app onto your phone, connect it to your wireless network, add the location, add the device, and once it is online the top outlet will be a green light. Not terribly difficult to set-up but you will need to follow the instructions. Results: The Android app allows me to see how frequently the pumps run, how long the pumps run in each cycle, and the approximate gallons pumped. Now I know exactly what is going on down there with the pumps. Very nice. The best feature is that you can add your cell phone number to the PumpSpy Android App and you can receive text message alerts if anything is going wrong. If your internet goes down, you will get a text message. Most importantly, if the power goes out, you will get a text message as well. This is perfect for my situation since a power outage could lead to a massive flood in a bad storm. I also invested in the PumpSpy Battery Backup solution for the front of the basement which works off of the cellular network (not wireless). I will be adding a third Zoeller pump and it will also be using a PumpSpy Smart Outlet. How my system will work? The power goes out, I get a text message from PumpSpy. In a rain storm, the battery backup systems will last for 5-10 hours. I am installing a back-up generator, an inlet on the outside of my house, and an interlock device on my electrical panel. I get home and fire up the generator and my basement stays dry. The PumpSpy Smart Outlets are an integral part of my system that will allow me to make decisions based on the weather conditions. Love this product. UPDATE: i received a text message tonight from the PumpSpy Outlet: Excessive Motor Runtime. I checked the app and it looks like the pump motor was running continuously. Checked the pumps and the main pump was running but the water was NOT pumping out of the pit. I unplugged the main pump, checked outside and it turns out that the discharge pipe froze. I cut the excess pipe and used a heat gun to melt the ice inside the pipe. Plugged in the main pump and then it pumped and drained the pit. The PumpSpy App text message feature probably just saved me $300 because I never would have known that the pump was running continuously and it would have burned up eventually.

We live in an area where our sump pump runs fairly often. We installed PumpSpy several months ago. It was very easy to install. We checked the pumpspy reports regularly on our cell phone. All of a sudden, it started to report a ridiculous amount of water being pumped. It was so much water reported, that we suspected that the PumpSpy unit was defective. We emailed tech support a couple of times. They responded quickly, but didnt diagnose the problem perfectly, they did give us a hint. We finally realized that there was a rock stuck in the impeller blades of the sump pump. This caused the pump to not be able to pump water, but, since it was still drawing current, and running most of the time, PumpSpy reported that it was pumping a lot of water. (PumpSpy works by measuring electricity going through it to the pump). We were able to fix the sump pump. Since PumpSpy alerted us that there was a problem, we were able to fix it. Without PumpSpy, we would not have known there was a problem until we had a massive flood.

My unit does not give me data on my pump performance as it is supposed too. My friend likes her PumpSpy and tells me it works well. It comes with a water level monitor that works. If my main pump failed and the back up kicked in. My old pump failed and my basement flooded. I really want to avoid that. The advantage of the data I do not get would warn that the main pump is in trouble. I have been working with customer service and they are sending a new unit. They have been pleasant to deal with. This is an up date.

Update: 6-15-22: I spoke with someone from PumpSpy, and they are going to add the features back and explore how to better address this going forward. The developer of this product has actively removed a key feature: cycle history. Previously you could see 90 days worth of information on how often the sump pump ran. Now it only tells you the number for the current day. They have not provided any announcement or reasoning or otherwise indicated why they removed this key feature. If they are willing to remove that feature, it’s only a matter of time before future “improvements” further nerf this product and its usefulness.
